The Minister of State for Media Affairs, Ali Al-Ayed, and the Minister of Health, Nathir Obeidat, spoke at a Wedneday press conference about the COVID-19 situation in Jordan.

The Minister of Health Nathir Obeidat said "Coronavirus is spreading fast and currently, there is no magical solution for it," noting that there is no age bracket immune to dying from coronavirus in Jordan.

Obaidat said 20 percent of coronavirus cases are recorded among people between the ages of five and 19 and 13 percent between ages 19 and 24.

However, the elderly are the most affected by COVID-19 and most deaths are recorded among older citizens.

The ministry is working on providing enough COVID-19 vaccines for at least 20 percent of the Jordanian population, as soon as it is available, said Obeidat.

Addressing the issue in Al-Bashir Emergency Ward, Obeidat explained that the ministry is working on finding a soultion to combat the overcrowding. Field hospitals may be used to treat COVID-19 regular hospitals are preferred, he said. 

He further explained that the high number of cases recorded Tuesday were due to a high number of PCR tests conducted across the Kingdom.

He reassured that Jordan has a large number of ventilators and "our health system is not close to collapsing."

The hospitals are capable of handling COVID-19 patients but we must prepare for the worst and the current plan is to increase the number of beds, he said.

Regarding the total lockdowns in Jordan, the Minister of State for Media Affairs, Ali Al-Ayed said they will only occur Fridays until the end of 2020.

Al-Ayed lastly added Friday Prayer will continue to be held at mosques during lockdown and worshippers must make their way on foot during the one hour window.

As of next week, there will be two weekly government press conferences, one about the COVID-19 situation in Jordan and the other about other issues.
